Dropping / Olympic lifts
Bumpers are built to hit the floor. Iron is not — manufacturers like REP explicitly advise against dropping iron (bar, plates, and floor all take the hit). If cleans, snatches, or intentional dumps are in the plan, choose bumpers for the working weight.
Floor, bar & neighbors
Rubber cushions impact and cuts clang when you load. It does not erase vibration through a slab. Pair either plate type with mats or a platform if noise is a real constraint.
Diameter & deadlift height
IWF-style bumpers stay near 450 mm across sizes (Rogue Echo lists 450 mm ±3 mm). Iron diameters usually fall with weight — Rogue’s machined line lists 448 mm for the 45 lb plate, 300 mm for the 25, and 228 mm for the 10. A light iron pull starts lower than a bumper pull.
Thickness / sleeve space
Iron 45s are typically much thinner than bumper 45s. Rogue lists machined iron 45s at 1.50″ wide vs Echo bumper 45s at 2.40″. Heavy squatters who never drop often prefer iron so more plates fit on a standard sleeve.
Cost per pound
